While they may look similar, there are differences in how they are built and maintained. Strictly speaking, patios are installed directly on the ground, often on a concrete base. Some homeowners, however, place their patios on gravel, tiles or pavers, to make it a little more water-resistant.


What Is a Deck?


Unlike patios, decks are constructed with either wood or vinyl and they are held up by foundational supports like piers several inches off the ground. This allows contractors to install decks on the same grade as your first or second-floor rooms, giving decks a little bit more versatility than patios in terms of placement.


Which One Should You Choose?


Deck construction can affect certain parts of your home. Some areas of your vinyl siding, for example, may need to be temporarily removed to accommodate a deck addition. But if your home is built on uneven ground like those on the side of a hill, decks are more practical than patios. 


However, if you want your outdoor living area to be situated away from your main house, patios are the way to go. Ultimately, the decision depends on these factors and your own preference.
